Endurance events appear to be the forte of the Marlins Swim Club as members have competed in several recent competitions.

The ASA Half Hour swimming Challenge attracted six participants, three of whom won medals in their age groups , Fiona Seymour, bronze, Lindsey Shenton, silver and Jenny Ball, gold, Alison Harding, who improved her distance this year, Jane Dodd and Tim Matthews. Team bronze was won in the 45+ years age group.

The club’s A team entered Sandown and Shanklin Lions charity Swimarathon at their home pool, the Heights, swimming rounds of 50 metres each for an hour, winning the 16+ team medals for the second year in succession.

Another charity endurance swim, held each year is the Swimathon, supported by Olympic Gold medalist, Duncan Goodhew. Jane and Jenny both swam the 5K - 200 lengths distance, each reducing their 2009 time by 3 minutes. Jane was placed high in the 50-54 age group with a time of 1 hour 48 minutes and Jenny won the 70-74 group in a time of 1 hour 41 minutes. Alison swam the 2.5K – 100 lengths challenge also bettering her previous time.

Club swimmer, Karen Lewis, was very successful in her first London Marathon with a time of 3 hours 41 minutes. Taking a break from her swimming to concentrate on preparation for the event, paid off putting Karen in the top 300 runners with a guaranteed place in 2011 in a start of 2000 instead of 35,000!

Meanwhile, at the Gloucester Masters Open Meet, Lindsey Shenton, Jenny Ball and Joan Kidd swam at the impressive GL1 Sports Centre, all winning medals:

Lindsey 50-54 years, 400 free 5.55.26 Bronze, 200 free 2.46.49 silver, 100 free 1.17.76 Bronze, 100 back 1.30.21 silver and 50 back 40.72.

Joan won all gold medals in the 80-84 years age group: 100free 2.05.23 , 50 breast 1.06.35, 50 back 1.02.39 and 50 free.

Jenny in the 70-74 years won the 400free 7.14.38, 200 free 3.29.41 and 100 free, 1.39.85, with silvers in 50 back 55.04, and 100 IM 2.01.57.
